Erected already during the Etruscan-Roman period, the Rocca dei Borgia was for a long time the strategic bulwark of defense in the Greco-Gothic wars
Renovated at the behest of the Benedictine Abbot Giovanni V, it underwent a great expansion during the Borgiano period to reach its maximum splendor during the era of the Colonna family who managed this castle for more than 115 years.
Rocca is closed for restoration work. Thanks to our 3D visit it will be possible to perceive the historical grandeur of this structure even during this period of closure.

Around the year 529, Saint Benedict of Norcia established his first monastery on this relief, from which the Benedictine order derived. It was for the community of Monte Cassino that the Rule of Saint Benedict was composed.
The Sacro Speco guards the Grotto where St. Benedict decided to spend his period of eremitical reflection.
